Northvolt sells its factory in Gdańsk

Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has decided to sell its factory in Gdańsk. According to the portal www.money.pl, the plant will be taken over by a "leading industrial group," although its name has not been officially disclosed. However, the Swedish newspaper "Svenska Dagbladet" reports that the buyer is Scania, a truck manufacturer. The transaction is valued at less than 100 million kronor (approximately 8.9 million euros), which is significantly lower than the 1.6 billion kronor that Northvolt has invested in the plant's development since 2021.

The factory, located on Elbląska Street in Gdańsk, is part of Northvolt Systems Industrial, a company specializing in the development and production of battery systems for heavy industry and specialized machinery, such as mining equipment. It currently employs around 150 people.

Last year, Northvolt closed another plant in Gdańsk that was focused on energy storage, leading to workforce reductions. However, the current sale of the factory includes the transfer of all necessary assets, employees, and contracts to ensure a smooth continuation of operations. Orders contracted for 2025 will be fulfilled as planned.

The decision to sell aligns with Northvolt's strategy of focusing on large-scale battery cell production. The transaction is expected to enable the further development of industrial operations under the new owner.
