Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice is the largest non-ferrous metals institute in the world of a unique character due to the wide and complex scale of the research conducted. In its 14 research departments full scale studies are carried out, beginning from laboratory tests to the pilot scale tests, in the area of all non-ferrous metals, especially Cu, Al, Zn, Pb, Ag, related to:

-          treatment of ores and other mineral resources
-          pyrometallurgy
-          hydrometallurgy
-          treatment of scrap and wastes
-          environmental protection
-          analytical chemistry
-          processing of metals and alloys
-          materials science and engineering - new materials
-          chemical power sources

IMN has three Divisions in outside locations: Light Metals Division in Skawina, Central Laboratory of Batteries and Cells in Poznań, and Division in Legnica, as well as spin-off company  Innovator.

The Institute performs technological works and projects for the industry, which are intended to stimulate technological development of the Polish non-ferrous metals sector ensuring its sustainable growth and economic efficiency at preserved relevant standards concerning its impact on the natural environment and the society.

IMN is also involved in small-scale production of:

-    flotation machines
-    Pb, Al alloys
-    certified reference materials

Institute has conducted many research studies and provided expert opinions for such countries as Germany, and China in the area of ore treatment, metallurgy, metal processing and environmental protection.

IMN actively participates in international projects, especially in the projects conducted within the scope of EU's Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development.
